Anxiety Depression Insomnia Booklet

In our contemporary society, mental health remains a taboo. But it is essential to take care of it as much as we take care of the other aspects of our health.

The About Health booklet on Anxiety Depression Insomia explains each of these three problems, their causes, their health consequences, risk factors associated to them as well as available treatments. It also contains follow-up tools for you, to help you notice the effects of your treatment.

The following are excerpts from the booklet:

Anxiety
Fear and stress are necessary for the proper functioning of the human organism. They alert us to danger so our body can defend itself more effectively. It is normal to feel stress on occasion. Indeed, stress can be beneficial since it prepares us for real danger and prompts us to take action in certain situations.

When we speak of anxiety, we are referring to a state of emotional distress caused by apprehension and fear. At times, anxiety can lead to feelings of powerlessness and may even affect our day-to-day functioning.

Causes of depression
The exact causes of depression are unknown. Certain neurotransmitters in the brain, including serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine, appear to play a role. The medications currently used to treat depression affect the quantity and effectiveness of these neurotransmitters.

Insomnia
We all experience insomnia from time to time. People suffering from insomnia may have trouble falling asleep, staying asleep or getting restful sleep. This is considered problematic if such difficulties occur three nights or more per week for over a month.
