What is atherosclerosis?
Atherosclerosis is a pathological condition caused by the gradual accumulation of fat on the inner lining of arteries. It occurs when excess cholesterolmore precisely LDL (bad) cholesterolflowing through the bloodstream is deposited on artery walls to create build-up (plaques). Since cholesterol cannot dissolve in the blood, with time, these plaques grow larger and harden: arteries then become less flexible and blood circulation, more difficult. This can result in a lack of oxygen to some body tissues or even obstruct arteries, thus blocking blood flow. Coronary and cerebrovascular diseases, such as heart attacks and strokes that lead to paralysis, can be the outcome of this chain of events.
