Alcohol, Drugs and Other

Answer:

Depending on a person’s predisposition to alcoholism, it is possible to become addicted to a substance after the first use. Although it is impossible to predict who can develop an addiction to alcohol, certain factors may increase a person’s risk:

  • A family history of alcohol or drug abuse
  • Having friends who drink or take drugs
  • Poor performance at school or work
  • Problems fitting in
  • Psychological or physical disability
  • Etc.
The presence or absence of these symptoms in no way indicates whether or not a person will become addicted.

A person is considered an alcoholic when they:
  • Need to drink alcohol to be able to feel good or to avoid feeling bad
  • Feel an urgent need to drink
  • Cannot stop drinking once they start
  • Suffer symptoms of withdrawal (nausea, sweating, shaking and anxiety) when they stop drinking
  • Physically need to consistently drink more alcohol in order to feel the effect
