All medications have an expiry date that is set by the manufacturer based on the manner in which the product deteriorates under normal conditions (temperature, humidity, etc.)

Once this expiry date has passed, the medication will likely have lost part or all of its effectiveness and have transformed into a different product whose safety and effectiveness in unknown. Certain medications even become toxic once the expiry date has passed!

It’s impossible to know if a product whose expiry date has passed is still safe and effective. When in doubt, it is best to bring expired medications to your pharmacist who will ensure they are destroyed in an environmentally friendly manner.
