Mobility

One depending on the other, autonomy and mobility are important factors of life appreciation. Over the years, numerous studies have proven that daily activity allows one to enjoy life more, to be happier and in better health.

And for a long time, specialists have worked on accessories adapted to the elderly or lightly handicapped people to maintain a certain degree of mobility, an essential factor of their active life.

However, to be effective, all these accessories must be well adjusted to their users. A poor adjustment can indeed cause discomfort, even injuries. Here are a few words on canes, crutches, walkers, and their adjustment.


 

Cane


The cane is held on the unaffected side. It reduces limping by supporting the handicapped leg and allows for an easier gait. To adjust it, keep a straight posture and relax your shoulders. The hand-rest should be in line with the wrist joint and the rubber tip, at approximately 15 cm from the foot. The quadripode or four-legged cane offers even more stability.


Avoid

Avoid using a cane that is too long, which will stress the shoulder, obliging the elbow to bend thus providing less support. A cane that is too short harms your balance. Using your cane on the injured-leg side causes a poor weight distribution and may cause various pains.

 
 

Crutches


Keep a straight posture and relax your shoulders; the top of the crutch should be at 5 cm from the armpit, the hand-rests at the wrist joint and the foot of the crutch, at approximately 15 cm from your foot.


Avoid

Avoid lcrutches that are too high and will stress the shoulders; they will pressure armpits, cause thorax pain and arm numbness. On the other hand, crutches that are too short will provoke a damageable posture and a difficult gait.

 
 

Walkers


With or without wheels, to make a good adjustment, you must stand straight and relax your shoulders, and wrist joints are in line with hand-rests.


Avoid

Avoid a walker that is too high, as it will oblige you to exaggerate neck and shoulders movement, to bend your elbows thus reducing the strength of your support. If it is too low, it causes pain and tensions as well as overweight on hands and wrists.
