Lexicon

Medical terminology is complex and very specialized. In order to help you better understand the language used by physicians and pharmacists, here is a list of the most common suffixes and roots :
 

…ALGIA

Pain.

Arthr…algia: muscular pain.
Nevralgia: pain in the area of a given nerve.

…CENTESIS

Prick, puncture.

Thoracentesis: puncture of the thoracic cavity.

…DESIA/DESIS

Lock.

Arthrodesis: when mobility is restrained through surgical intervention.

…ECTOMY

Ablation of an organ through surgical intervention.

Tonsillectomy: ablation of the tonsils.
Gastrectomy: ablation of the stomach.
Hysterectomy: ablation of the uterus.

…ITIS

Illness that is characterized by an inflammation (reaction provoked by the aggression of a microbe, virus, etc.).

Bronchitis: inflammation of the bronchi.
Sinusitis: inflammation of the nasal membrane.

…LYSIS

Liberation.

Neurolysis: Dissection and liberation of a nerve previously strangled by the neighbouring fibrous cells.

…OMA

Designates a tumor.

Lipoma: tumor composed of ever-multiplying fat cells.
Oste…oma: bone tumor.

…OSIS

Designates:

Tuberculosis, carcinosis



Arthrosis as opposed to arthritis.
Dermatosis as opposed to dermatitis.

…PATHY/THIA

Generic term designating all the illnesses that can affect a given organ.

Cardiopathy: Relative to all heart pathologies.
Encephalopathy: Brain pathology of a non-inflammatory nature.

…PEXIA

Surgical fixation.

Nephropexia: Consists in pulling up the kidney and fixating it to a rib.

…PLASTY

Intervention consisting in modifying the designated body shape.

Blepharoplasty: Correction of an eyelid.
Rhinoplasty: Correction of the shape of the nose.

…RRHAPHY

Repair using sutures or other processes.

Myorrhaphy: Muscular repair.
Perineorrhaphy: Repair of the perineal muscle.

…SCOPY

Diagnostic method that consists in looking inside the body using an optical device.

Gastroscopy: Visual examination of the inside of the stomach.
Radioscopy/fluoroscopy: Examination of the image formed by a body onto a fluorescent screen when it is X-rayed.

…SYNTHESIS

Fixation.

Osteosynthesis: Fastening of the ends of a fractured bone using sutures, rings, plates or other mechanical means.

…TOMY

Incision of a complete organ or opening in a hollow organ.

Gastrotomy: Incision in the stomach in order to perform exploratory surgery and identify a tumor.
