High-Energy and High-Protein Diet
If you suffer from a chronic disease (Parkinson's) or just had a surgery, you may feel like eating is too much of an effort. In these moments when you feel weak and have no appetite, it is especially important to choose foods that are high in energy, even in small amounts, to make sure that you eat enough to prevent malnutrition. First, here is some general advice concerning your diet:
✓ Divide your daily menu in smaller more frequent meals (3 small meals and 3 snacks);
✓ Do not drink a lot during meals to avoid filling your stomach too quickly. Nonetheless,
you should drink enough at all times to maintain a good hydration;
✓ Rest before meals.
Secondly, you will find below a list of suggestions to help you select foods that can boost your energy and/or protein intake:
✓ Choose whole milk instead of partly skimmed milk; add cream to soups, coffee, tea or
other beverages;
✓ Add sauce to your meats and fish;
✓ Add cheese, butter or margarine, or sauce to your vegetables;
✓ Add croutons, crackers, eggs or cheese to soups or salads;
✓ Add powdered milk to oatmeal, scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, soups, cream-based
sauces, cream-based desserts;
✓ Choose nutritious snacks such as dried fruits, various almonds, yogurt with fruits and
nuts, muffins, cheese, peanut butter sandwiches, and beverages such as milk, fruit or vegetable juice instead of coffe or tea.
Always watch your diet: it has a strong impact on your health!
